Wow, it's been forever and a day since I posted on Livejournal. When I went back to lurk on other people's journals and communities, I saw that LJ will soon be changing up their features. People are apparently migrating to DW so I thought I'd give it a try and just crosspost and import so that both journals are updated at the same time.

I'll probably post reviews from my Tumblr. I'm currently deep into a Doctor Who obsession like no other. I'm legit writing reviews and analyses. It seems this will be the only way to keep up with my English skillz. I've slacked since I graduated and now I'm sure my grammar has suffered. I'm gonna use my reviews to get back into the swing of writing. I write quite informally so prepare for cursing and slang mixed in with upper level vocabulary/syntax. It's just how I roll.

Well, here we go. I'll be updating with new posts soon I think.

So....just attempted my first lesson in Korean on Rosetta Stone....

Yeah, ROFLville! Apparently, I suck at pronunciation and vocab retention. I also can't read Korean at all, so that was fun trying to decipher everything after it's already been made into a sentence. Lot's of fun....NOT!

LOL! But I'm gonna keep trying. What trips me out the most is this is my first lesson and it was only 30min or so. If I'm having such a hard time with this, I don't even wanna think about later. I guess I'll just keep doing each lesson over and over until I'm confident I have the vocab/pronunciation/spelling down.

That's one thing about learning at my own leisure instead of in a class; I can take my own sweet time! マイペースでいいよ! Yeah, eff that class/grade/GPA shit....

Too long, too long....

I guess I'm trying to see if I can update more regularly. Maybe now that I've graduated from college I'll be able to find the time.

Yeah, right.....

Well, a quick update. I've graduated. Finally. English Major w/ Japanese Minor. I love school but I hate it at the same time. It's like the atmosphere, the acquisition of new knowledge, socializing with friends; those things I love. I can't get enough of that feeling. But the papers, the slogging study, the occasional shitty class/teacher, GROUP PROJECTS; all those I hate with a vengeance.

Now that I'm out in the world, I find myself broke, bored, and busting my ass doing two jobs that have nothing to do with my major at all.

"Thanks Bachelor's Degree in English. Guess what? You're useless...."

I mean I knew going in that English was one of those "all purpose" majors. Pretty much, you can do anything and nothing with it. Still, I'd hoped for a better outlook with an actual degree under my belt.

*sigh* Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough....

Well, that's it for now.

Ta-ta~

So it's been 3 months since I posted. A lot has happened. I'm almost finished up school, 7 classes left. I'm trying to go into publishing. Hopefully I'll find a job what with our crap economy. It's right on time, as I'm running out of money to support myself. As it is, I'll still probably have to take out a loan.

I'm also going to Japan this summer for two weeks. If I can ever get health insurance. I can't wait!

Just yesterday I went to see Jero-san at the National Cherry Blossom Festival in DC. Great stuff! He's so cool! His voice is awesome! He's also my only vindication for learning Japanese through JSL; if he can do it, so can I!

In a few years I hope to be in Japan. It's one of my dreams to live there for 2 years or so.

So I'm going to make a stab at updating regularly again. This is mostly so the feed will go to my Facebook.

I just watched the Pilot for the new Showtime series, "United States of Tara" about a woman with Dissociative Identity Disorder and four distinct personalities; an average mom, a teenager, a housewife, and a biker dude. (That's right, biker DUDE, not biker chick. Meaning the personality is male.) It was very well put together. Of course it helped that Steven Spielberg and the woman who wrote "Juno" are paired up for it. I look forward to seeing where it goes.

I also just got a PS3 and the new game "Mirror's Edge". I just finished beating it. It was a little short for my tastes, but the game play was really cool. I enjoyed the story and the music. The cut scenes were animated like a cartoon. On one hand I liked it cause it was different, but on the other hand I thought they could have fully CG'ed the scenes. I mean this is the PS3, right? If you're going to make a game for this system then utilize all the system can do. It was especially disappointing when considering how short the game was. Since it was so short, why not make up for it with kick-ass cut scenes?

Still, the game was good and I look forward to seeing the sequel. The game is resolved at the end, but there is room for the story to go on.

Wow, it's been too long since I last blogged.

The school semester will be up in two weeks. This was not a good semester. I'm just so burnt out. I don't know how some people do it. I've been in school only 3 1/2 years, and I'm tired already. How can people do this for seven or eight years?! I'm just ready to leave.

I want to start working, but I'm still indecisive about what I want to do. I've an interest in going into Publishing and working in a Publishing house. I also pulled on a Japanese Minor, that I'm hoping to take somewhere. I want to acquire Japanese and be fluent. Unlike Spanish with I took from 8th grade up to College 201 and I still can't speak it. Maybe if I dropped myself off in a Spanish speaking country and said, "Fuck it, you don't learn it, you don't eat!" Maybe I should do this with Japanese, hm?

I guess it's good holidays are coming up. (Although I'm planning on taking a Intersession course.)
This Thanksgiving "break" did not help. It was three days and a weekend, and back to school. Hardly enough time to relax. I guess "thems the breaks" as they say, whoever "they" are.

Well that's it for now. Mata, ne!
ravens_nest: (Default)
So I've done several unprecedented things today...

Most obviously is this post I'm writing now.

Next I have *gasp* uploaded another piece of artwork on my DeviantART page. (I think the last time I did that was two years ago.)

And lastly, but certainly not least, I have started to file my Taxes about a week before they are due instead of the night before.

I feel like I'm on a role.

Also today, I've gotten my hair done, fiddled around on Facebook for three hours, and wandered around the North Campus School of Public Health building for two hours in search of the Kendo Club. After finally locating the room the club meets in, I waited around for an hour, forty minutes of which was spent dozing on a bench in front of the door, only for them to not show up. I was looking for them because my Japanese club wanted to ask the Kendo guys to participate in our Japanese Festival. The whole debacle could have been avoided had another member of the group showed up for more than just the first meeting or even if she'd shot an e-mail out saying she couldn't do the task she volunteered to do. Then we would have had weeks to try to contact the Club instead of the measly days I had to work with.

Ah well, thems the breaks, eh?

Ja ne!
ravens_nest: (Default)
Alright, I've updated the sidebar with some new recommendations. Just because I haven't updated in a while doesn't mean nothing has happened. (Neither does it mean a lot has been happening. It just means I haven't updated.)

Anyway, Spring Break has passed in the freakin' blink of an eye. What happened to Break time? When did it get so minuscule? It used to be that Spring Break was the shining goal that every student struggled toward during the grueling Spring semester; Thanksgiving Break for the Fall. This time around the break barely started before I was back in school. It's supposed to rejuvenate and gear you up for the work ahead. I feel more tired than I did before and generally apathetic to the world around me. I even skipped one of my English classes and Tai 'Chi today because I didn't feel like catching the bus! What the hell is that!? (OK, maybe that bit is something more than just the short break, but it damn sure didn't help!)

Ah well, catch you later.

Hey guys,

I was looking up Primary results on CNN and found this article about
Asian-Americans and Obama. I thought it was interesting enough to
post. I'll save my own opinions for later.

Here's the link: Does Obama Have an Asian Problem?

I think this opinion is a load of garbage.

In this modern world I'd like to think people don't make important
decisions based solely on immediate gut reactions. I'd like to think
we have progressed far enough that we can separate social/cultural
influences from our own opinions effectively enough that we don't vote
with the status quo unless we want to. Do I deny that those gut
reactions exist? Absolutely not. Of course we are effected by our
societies. They are a large part of building who we are and always
will be. But I try very hard to think about what motivates my
decisions before making a decision, and while I don't always do it
successfully, I want to at least give that same benefit of the doubt
to others. What ever happened to innocent 'til proven guilty?

And when did Asian suddenly mean Black people haters? I've never been
prejudiced against by an Asian-American. I can't quite grasp this
idea. Do I deny the existence of Asian racism? Of course not. Just
like there are racist Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, etc. There is no
culture on this Earth that has not prejudiced against somebody else
for some ridiculous and unfounded reason. That doesn't mean one should
blanket stereotype any of them.

Personally I hate being lumped in with a group without my consent. I
personally don't believe in racial traits as a truth. I know that I
don't like all of the things considered "black", and I know other
people who feel the same way. I think it's a little cheap and unworthy
to negate the individual in race-fired decisions. To do so is to limit
humans to nothing more than herd beasts. I think my Individual is
thoughtful enough to know when to follow a status quo and when to
become an outlier. I'd like to extend that consideration to other
people too.

My culture may influence me, but it doesn't control me.

OMG, I'm sitting here laughing because it's been so long since I posted. I'm currently sick as a dog and can't breathe. I thought I'd just post something so I'd have a post for the new year. Yeah, I know it's February, but better late than never, right?

Hisashiburi De!

Well, I'm not gonna say much because frankly, I'm kinda tired. I'm supposed to be moving next month in prep for going to a 4 yr college. I got straight A's last semester and I'm feeling really lazy, so I'm not sure what, if anything I'll get done in my summer courses. I'll be taking Watercolor and Drawing next month to round out my Associates with two electives.

That's all for now.

I'm writing this post to honor my brother. His name was Staff Sergeant Jay Martin. Sunday his unit's Hummer was caught near an exploding IED (Improvised Explosive Device) in Baghdad and he and two other soldiers died. He was 29 years old. He'd been in the Army nearly ten years now and he was proud to be a soldier.

I will not sully his memory and dream by ranting at the Government and debating whether the war should have happened. I am not ashamed that he was a soldier, I love him and I know he was doing what he loved, what he wanted; serving his country to the best of his ability. He was beautiful. He was shorter than me, but he never lacked in authority and grace. I've always wanted to be like him even though I'm a girl. That didn't matter, because he was a father to me like my real one wasn't, and you know how girls are with their fathers.

I'm an e-mail person, so we usually communicated that way. The last time I e-mailed him, I told him about my interest in learning Japanese and, after I gave him a few practice sentences, he replied, "Well it sounds like you are doing very well with Japanese. To be honest I would'nt mind learning Japanese either. I am really intrested in the Japanese culture, specifically he Code of Bushido. (I happen to thing that the Samuri were the worlds most dedicated warriors). It would be nice to study it with a understanding of their language." Typos aside (He was not an English major, but I still love him.), his words struck me the night after the military men came to tell me. Bushido literally translates as "The Way of the Warrior". Bushido "holds justice, benevolence, love, sincerity, honesty, and self-control in utmost respect."

As I think on the meaning of Bushido and the life of my brother, I realize that though he had no formal learning of the "Way of the Warrior", he had already mastered Bushido on instinct. Truly, I do not say this only because he was my brother and a soldier, trust me I understand both his good points and his bad. But these virtues of Bushido he had in abundance. He was truly this country's and my family's Samurai Warrior.

Staff Sergeant Jay Martin

Jay, I love you and I always will. Take care of Mom and Grandma in heaven. We'll party when I get there.

Aishiteru,
Raven

P.S. Articles can be found in the Post and the Sun. Whether these were completely accurate in portraying his life here in Maryland is still up for debate with the family, but the articles are online if you type his name in the search bar.

I finished a three day meeting in Baltimore as one of the people representing students on my Community College's Presidential Search Advisory Committee. To explain, our college's President is resigning at the end of this fiscal year, so we've got to find a new one to take over. A committee of representatives from all the internal constituencies and external community sectors was formed to whittle down the numerous candidates to 3-5 for the Board of Trustees to hire from.

While at the BWI Marriott, (Simply fantastic! The pool was magnificent. There was a tiered waterfall at one end that fed into the rest of the pool. Beautiful. $480/night to stay there.) I was approached by the Concierge. She wanted me to come mentor at her newly started Youth Program with her church. I explained that I'd only be able to do it Saturdays. We exchanged contact info.

That aside, my conversation with her really got me thinking about my time in Baltimore. Up until about three years ago I'd lived in B-More for roughly sixteen years. I came from the commonly known area between North Ave. and White Lock, thus named "White Lock City" by the city youth.

I have a real Love-Hate Relationship with Baltimore.
( And it goes on... )

So I just did my taxes...

I owe.

To be exact, I owe $599.00 to the federal government.

Let me explain why I apparently owe. I'm an orphan. Both my parents were dead by the time I was 7. I get a monthly payment from the DC Pension office because my father was a teacher and died before he could retire and start using his pension.

Apparently, because he died before he could use it and I have never given money into that pension, I have to pay taxes on 100% of it as if it were my own pension; as if I'm retired and living off of a pension. But that only accounts for about $400 of what I owe. The rest is from my Board of Trustee stipend for which I received about $900 last year. That goes down as "Self-employment," which you know is taxed up the wazoo. I think it might also be because my Aunt (Legal Guardian) will be claiming me as a dependent.

Yeah...that's usually how my life goes.

At least I'll get $92 from Maryland. Apparently, that gets processed quick so I should see it at the end of next week. I really need that. I'm going to be taking on another class (a weekender) and I didn't know how I'd get the book for it. My next stipend payment will be in the beginning to middle of April, so I hope it'll be in time to pay what I owe the Federal Government. I'll probably work out a payment plan just in case.

I know it sucks, but what do you do? You just got to pay up and hope the next time around it doesn't happen again.

See ya next time.
ravens_nest: (Hyde Faith Believer)
Yes, I just used the Japanese word for "storm" in my subject title. Why? Because I suddenly remembered that was the Japanese word for it and decided to write it. No, I didn't use it in reference to the J-pop boy band of the same name, whom I still assert that not a damn one of them can sing to save their life, though they're all super-cute (Matsumoto Jun is a sexy beast!) and their songs are quite catchy.

Now on to my real post.

Today was a "calm" day. You know, the peaceful time you have just before some event of great activity and change happens. I have these on occasion. I'll be moving in the next few months. Not sure where yet, or with whom, but hopefully I'll be able to find a roomie soon. This will be a time of great change for me as I'll be moving without my Aunt. Hopefully I'll make it OK. Just before events like this I have a period of time, from an hour to a whole week, of just full-on Nirvana-esque tranquility. What happens after can be a good or bad event, but I always get very calm before it happens and my mind seems to think about anything and everything no matter how base.

So today I went to get my hair done down at the Haircuttery at Dupont Circle (An adventure all on it's own.) and I was in this "wandering mind" mode the entire time. I thought about everything and nothing, with the thoughts usually shifting every time something new came across my gaze.

Low and behold I saw something curious. At the Gallery Pl/Chinatown Metro Station a sign meant to indicate what train was coming to which side of the tracks said, "Branch Station via Anacostia." Now as I stood there I had to break down this sign. It is understood that the train coming along this side of the tracks will take me from my current station to Branch Station, provided it has a green light lit on it. But with the use of the word "via" does not the sign imply that I could perhaps catch a different train to Branch Station when coming from Gallery Pl/Chinatown? But the Metrorail Green line is the only train I can catch between the two, and that line has to go through Anacostia anyway, so why put the "via" there? Are there some Green line trains that skip over Anacostia?

This is what I was thinking about. Some of you might ask why I'm being picky about this. The answer is no reason at all. Sometimes I get very anal about stupid stuff like that. Is it going to bother me? No, but I will remember it from now on and think about it every time I see that phrasing in Metro Stations. This is how I am. I really concentrate on little stuff during my "wandering mind" moments. To fit my mood, I was listening to Hyde's Roentgen English album on my Mp3. Soft and mellow rock and a crooning voice was just what I needed. Spice that up with a couple jazzy songs and I was really relaxed today. Great stuff.

That's all for now.
ravens_nest: (Hyde Faith Believer)
So I finally updated my sidebar with some new recommendations. I finally got the hang of using HTML in them too, so they look cool.

If you have the time, everyone has got to see Byakuyakou. This thing is unlike any Asian drama I have seen to date. I have not seen any that make their main characters so attractive and detestable at the same time. One minute you're in love with them and the next you just want them to die, they've been so skeazy. The show takes you places you never wanted to go and yet you can't look away. Every freaking episode blows your mind. I mean the crap that these two do. The crimes and the hate and the anger, but the love, the romance, and the sadness... I mean this thing is literally an emotional roller-coaster. It's like this continuous cycle of love and hate, tension and relief and I don't even know!

Lots of criminal activity. Not all of them are violent, but a good number are. It stays PG-13, so don't worry, but at times it does push the edge. Don't watch this if you want to cheer up, it does not have a happy ending and if you don't know that from the get-go there's something wrong with you.

The acting was superb. Both the children and the adult actors own their characters. I can't even describe how easy it is to suspend your disbelief here. Alone the story is just good, but with the acting and the cinematography...? Check it out. I'm telling you, you will not regret it.

That's all for now.

Ja, mata ne?
ravens_nest: (Hyde Faith Believer)
Apparently, gators aren't the only thing Florida wants out of it's cities. In recent reports in the Metro Express paper, which I often get on my morning bus ride to school, it is now illegal to feed more than 25 homeless people in Orlando, Florida without a permit from the City. The article, very ironically I might add, describes a park sign that basically says, "Don't lie on park benches or in the shrubbery" in a "horizontal" manner. The comment is obviously directed at the homeless.
( The rest of my tirade on the society... )
ravens_nest: (Hyde Faith Believer)
Has anyone ever gotten into an argument that was really intense while it was happening but totally ridiculous in hindsight?

Phase 1: My aunt walks in the door and thee first thing I say, verbatim, is "Hey Aunt Glen, I just got back 5, no maybe 10 minutes ago. No one called in that time."

Now what are the first words out of her mouth? "No hello, how was your day?" Real sarcastic-like too. I swear to God.

Now, our entire argument progressed from there. I reminded her of my previous greeting and she said, I swear, "What does that mean, 'back'? Where'd you come back from?"

Uh, school. This is what I'm thinking. That was when we had an argument over semantics. Is it OK for me to say "I just got back" instead of "I just got home" when I'm speaking about returning from school. Taking into account the context clues (Context is King!) of we're talking in our apartment and the fact that that morning she heard me say I was leaving for school. You should assume naturally that the place I got back from was school and the place I got back to was home. Right?

That argument ended unresolved.

( Our Ridiculous Ramble Along the Road of Rancor...Continued. )
That's about where I am now and I guess my Aunt can't handle that. But either way I can't revert back to how I was before. I refuse to (No regression for me!). So I don't know what to do to fix the problem. It's starting to feel like her and my sisters. Like we just can not live together peacefully. We're starting to have stupid arguments like this maybe twice a week, if not more.

I don't know.

It's late, so I'm gonna sign off and watch some Asian dramas before hitting the sack. Sorry I talked so much this time around, but this has been bugging me for a while.

Ja, mata ne.

Yatta!!! My sister just had her baby this morning! I am officially an aunt for the first time in my life. Yay! That's all I wanted to say. Nothing else I'm really pressed to talk about now. I'll update if anything strikes me.
