ravens_nestApparently, gators aren't the only thing Florida wants out of it's cities. In recent reports in the Metro Express paper, which I often get on my morning bus ride to school, it is now illegal to feed more than 25 homeless people in Orlando, Florida without a permit from the City. The article, very ironically I might add, describes a park sign that basically says, "Don't lie on park benches or in the shrubbery" in a "horizontal" manner. The comment is obviously directed at the homeless.
People are literally getting arrested for food drives. Police beat cops are stopping to tell the volunteers to stop giving the homeless food and not patrolling for, I don't know, criminals. This is in no way the police's fault. They are just doing their jobs. It's the ridiculous government that wants the homeless out of sight. The permit I can slightly understand, I mean, it's a good thing that the government regulate who's feeding the homeless because you never know what kind of stuff they give to these people. But along with permits there are only "designated" areas that the donations can take place. Inevitably these places are where normal citizens don't see. Away from the "beauty" of the city.
I'm an optimist at heart, so I'll give them the benefit and say maybe they didn't mean it that negatively. Maybe their intentions were really good. But you know damn well what good intentions end up doing. And this looks really offensive. Especially that park sign. I'm still trippin' off of that. How can you put that kind of sign up? Are you going to start arresting joggers for taking an afternoon nap on a bench? Hell no. The only people getting arrested for that are the people who look like they have more layers of clothes on than the weather suggests. That is so discriminatory.
Sometimes I don't know what's up with America. I love my country, vices and virtues considered, but sometimes I wish we had a king that just went in and slapped somebody for proposals like this.
